Lafayette Elementary School held a nicotine-free pledge event on Monday, March 18 where students learned about the dangers of nicotine and pledged to remain nicotine-free. Teachers and students alike also learned the dangers of nicotine and vaping.
Lafayette Elementary School partnered with the Macon County Health Department for a school-wide nicotine-free pledge event. Macon County High School FCCLA and TNSTRONG (Tennessee Stop Tobacco and Revolutionize our New Generation) students provided a vaping lesson for all 4th and 5th grade students, educating them on the harms of vaping and how to become more involved in the TNSTRONG empowerment movement.
Each 4th and 5th grade student made a “pledge” by signing strips of red paper that were then linked together and hung within the school. This giant pledge chain will be displayed at the school for the remainder of the school year as a visual reminder of the commitment these students made for their future self and future health. The health department was able to purchase the school a new soccer goal to be housed at LES as a reward for being the first school in Tennessee for all students to take the nicotine free pledge.
“From my understanding, this would potentially be the first school in the state of Tennessee where all students made this pledge,” said Halee Porter, Public Health Educator for Macon and Jackson counties. “We are really excited for the community.”
