Cathy Jo was born January 8, 1956 to Thomas (known as Rusty) and Betty Pharris Cates. She died at her residence in Lafayette Monday night, on December 9th, 2012 at the age of 56.
Cathy was preceded in death by both her parents along with her brother Danny Cates who died of cancer. She moved to Lafayette at age 13 where she met the Lord and joined Brattontown Missionary Baptist Church. While attending Macon County High School, she performed as a cheerleader on the basketball squad alongside Jada Law and Patsy Rush before graduating in 1974. While there, she met her first husband, Teddy Roger Gregory, whom she married at the age of twenty and with whom she bore two sons, Thomas and Benjamin Gregory. She worked at Carter Automotive until the plant shut down in 1994 then served at the Palace and Whitehouse nursing homes as a nursing assistant before her exit from public work and eventual remarriage. She underwent a lot of surgeries and suffering during her final years on this earth, but still managed to touch others with her motherly, nonjudgmental manner.
I thank God that she gave birth to me and my brother and that she taught us about Him at an early age. Her memorial services were held on December 16th at Alexander Funeral Home in Lafayette, Elder Stephen Brooks from Carthage officiating. Thank God for His presence during that service. The family would like to extend our utmost appreciation for all the prayers and support afforded during our mother’s loss.
