On Friday, the Red Boiling Spring Bulldogs took on the Jackson County Blue Devils. Both teams would come into this game 3-4 and only one would improve to 4-4. That team would be the Blue Devils, as they beat RBS 31-20.
Late in the fourth quarter during this game, a very frightening thing happened—more significant than the game loss that RBS was about to sustain. Quarterback Ty Tuck dropped back and delivered an incomplete pass. Tuck would then be hit late by a Jackson County player. Tuck lay motionless on the field for a time and was removed from the field by ambulance. Coaches say Tuck was able to move his fingers and toes slightly. Our prayers go out to Ty Tuck and his family in this hard time, and we all hope that he will make a speedy recovery.
The first quarter started out very peculiar as RBS lined up for the opening kick. The Bulldogs went back to kick it, and pulled an onside kick! The Dawgs recovered, and it was the Bulldogs’ ball. They wasted no time to drive down the field and score a 1 yard touchdown run by Ty Tuck. RBS missed the extra point, and that made it 6-0 Bulldogs.
Jackson County then acquired the ball, ran three plays, and fumbled, allowing RBS to pick things up and get the ball back! The Devils played tight defense and forced RBS to punt the ball. However, the Dawgs would pull a fake punt out of the bag and ran for the first down! Jackson Co. then got the ball back, and that’s how the first quarter ended: Bulldogs leading 6-0.
In the second, Jackson County drove down the field and scored a 15 yard TD run, making it 7-6. RBS would answer back with a score of their own, making it 14-7. Then, as time was running down in the second quarter, Jackson County got dangerously close to scoring. On fourth and goal from the one yard line, Jackson County ran a QB sneak, but was stopped by the Bulldogs’ Defense! However, although RBS would get the ball on the 1 INCH line, they couldn’t get it out of the endzone before Jackson County tackled them for a safety. At the half, it was 14-9 Bulldogs.
In the third, the beginning was quiet. Both teams had great defensive stops. However, Terrence Alexander would break the flood gates, scoring on a long 40+ yard TD run, making it 20-9. However, Jackson County would score again, and the score was 20-17 at the end of the half.
The fourth quarter was a heartbreaking, scary quarter for Bulldog fans, especially as this was the point when Tuck was injured. RBS would begin by losing the ball on a turnover on downs. Jackson County would get the ball and drop back to punt. They would pull a fake punt of their own, only they would return it for a TD. The score was then 24-20. RBS would get the ball back, and throw an interception. Jackson would make the most of the INT, scoring yet again to make the final score 31-20.
In the loss, the Dawgs drop to 3-5 on the season and look to bounce back against a talented Friendship Christian team on Friday, October 19 at home. It will be Senior Night, so all Senior are invited to come and participate in your last home football game.
