On Friday, the Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs took on the Monterey Wildcats in a key district match. The Bulldogs would come up short, losing 68-48 in the largest combined score in RBS history with 116. The Bulldogs drop to 3-4 on the season with the tough loss.
The first quarter started out with both teams being hot offensively. Both teams scored two quick touchdowns. However, RBS would get the run in a 2 point conversion, giving them the edge 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Ty Tuck would run in a 1 yard touchdown and make it 20-12. However, just a few moments later, Monterey would run in a 35 yard touchdown and get the 2 point conversion to make it 20-20. When RBS got the ball back, Ty Tuck throws an interception, and Monterey returns it for a touchdown, making it 28-20. Terrence Alexander would get the ball rolling for RBS as he runs in a 33 yard touchdown and gets the 2 points after, making it 28-28. However, Monterey would march down the field and get yet another touchdown, making it 36-28. That would all that happened in this crazy half though.
In the third, the defensive struggles continued for both teams. RBS allowed a 55 yard touchdown run which made the score 42-28. Then RBS, after a great kickoff return, would run in a 10 yard touchdown. Monterey would score again, this time from 10 yards out, making it 50-36 Monterey.
In the fourth quarter, the officials all went home and were replaced with the NFL replacement referees. Or so it seemed. Although the officiating can’t be blamed the ONLY reason that RBS lost, it definetley didn’t help them. Monterey would score a 35 yard touchdown, even though there was holding in the backfield by Monterey. RBS would then fumble, and Monterey would score again, also with the controversial holding call. RBS would run in a 62 yard touchdown and make it 62-42, but it wouldn’t be enough. Both teams scored once more before the game ended, making the final score 68-48.
Coach Shoulders talked to the Times after the game, saying that, “Our gameplan didn’t go well tonight.” “Offensively we played good,” he said, “but turnovers got us in the end.”
Red Boiling’s next game will be at Jackson County, which is a HUGE game for the Bulldogs. “We’re still alive!”, Coach Shoulders told the Times, “This game has playoff implications.” Come out to Jackson County and support your Red Boiling Spring Bulldogs!
