As first reported Friday morning on WEEN-AM/WLCT-FM radio, students from O’More College of Design will spend a week working around the square in August.
Specifics and logistics of their stay were discussed Thursday, June 17, when Macon Revitalization, Inc. met at the Welcome Center.
The seven to eight students from the Franklin, Tenn., school will arrive in Lafayette on Sunday, Aug. 8 and present their final presentations Friday, Aug. 13.
And no business on the square can match the bargain the students bring to town: their services don’t cost a dime.
There is no fee or future obligations required of local businesses.
Businesses on or in very close proximity to the square can submit applications through June 30 and can do so with no intention of ever implementing any of the student suggestions.
The students’ services are part of a summer project and will focus on both interior and exterior design.
"It's a huge win-win for both sides," said Katherine Raum, secretary for Macon Revitalization. "It's such a blessing and an honor to be selected [by O'More]. There's a lot of communities trying to get this opportunity."
Where possible, students will try to make their suggestions using local materials so that local merchants could more easily implement the changes. Design recommendations can be made on a budget as low as $50.
Students will provide their own meals while in Macon County and will be staying at the Armour’s Hotel in Red Boiling Springs. The Thomas House also has offered to help with lodging.
O’More is interested in returning to Red Boiling Springs next year to conduct a similar project in that city.
More details on the revitalization effort will appear in the June 24 print edition of the Macon County Times.
