“We think it is good,” Smith said. “We always have room for improvement and we are always striving to do our best but I feel that we received a good report card this past year.”
The report card shows different areas where the school has had growth and improvement and a percentage of its promotion rate. According to the report, the promotion rate was down 1.1 percent.
Smith stated that they work really closely with parents and students but if a kindergarten student or a first grader is not ready to go into the next grade they are not going to force or push them.
“We continue to look for ways to help students who are struggling,” Smith said. “The state looks at our promotion and we want to strive to make sure each child is ready to go into another grade not just send them for higher promotion numbers. Since we have started the intervention program we know a lot more about the children and the areas they may need extra attention in.”
The report card also looks at the amount of certified teachers schools have. Fairlane Elementary School is at 100 percent when it comes to having highly qualified teachers in all areas of the program.
The state report card also reports on the school’s attendance rate. In 2007 the rate was 95.6 and in 2009 the rate was at 95.4 which are in comparison to the states goal of 93 percent.
“We want children to attend school and see the importance of attending school each day, unless they are sick of course,” Smith said. “If our attendance rate is down the state would take a look at this over the next year. This is why we work closely with parents and students each day.
“Overall, I think this is good,” Smith said. “We always can improve and we will continue to do so, but we have highly qualified teachers and they are always striving to do the best they can with each child.”
