March 1983

•Twenty-nine men and several juveniles were arrested and charged with illegal cockfighting in the Siloam community.

•Harris Howser, one of the organizers of North Central Telephone Cooperative and general manager since 1993, retired.

•The Lafayette Jaycees took first place in the Tennessee Jaycee Basketball Tournament held in Woodbury, Tenn. Team members included Donnie Wills, Charles “Ott” Caruthers, Larry Birdwell, Coach Ray Mason, Ricky Burton, Keith Cothron, Ricky Shoulders and Mark Shrum.

•The Macon County High School Interact Club attended the District 678 Interact Convention held in Gatlinburg, Tenn., where Wendy Moore, Vicki Horn and Shelia Howard placed second in the Small Group Interact Talent Show, and Jon Kemp was chosen District 678 Representative for the 1984 Convention.

•Cherri Vinson of Red Boiling Springs won the Countywide Spelling Bee. Jim Beasley of Central placed second, and Laura Davenport of Red Boiling Springs placed third.

•The Lafayette Jaycees announced plans for their first Tournament of Lemons men’s beauty pageant.

•Glover’s Drugtown was robbed of several thousand dollars worth of drugs.

•Gerald Smalling retired as rural route carrier on Route 4 in Red Boiling Springs.

March 1976

•Oren Cooper announced his candidacy for Macon County Tax Assessor, while Leon Wooten announced for Road Supervisor.

•Randy Swaffer, Dawn Swaffer and Kenny Phifer won first place in the Rotary Club Talent Contest.

•Jan Green was named Valedictorian of Red Boiling Springs High School, and Mark Browning was named Salutatorian.

•Central Elementary cheerleaders included: Trena Wooten, Barbara Driver, Lisa Payne, Jesse Holliman, Polly Miller, Janet Wilson, Patty Meagher and Debra Toney.

March 1974

•The Red Boiling Springs Church of Christ announced the start of a new program where wheelchairs, walkers and crutches would be loaned out to people from Macon County, west Clay and west Jackson counties who needed such equipment.

•Mike Goolsby of Lafayette, freshman track member at Tennessee Tech, set a freshman and varsity track and field record during indoor season by running 0:31.8 in the 300 yard dash during the Intercollegiate Championships held at MTSU.

•Member of the 1974 Senior Class appearing in the play “Off the Track” included Buddy Jent, Teresa Simmons, Pam Flippin, Cynthia Porter, Connie Holliman, Bill Lindsey, Bob Link, Chris Johnson, Shelia Steenbergen, Mike McClard, Lolita Aldrich, Ricky Sneed, Paula Sliger, Patsy Gregory, Roger Hawks and Stella Willhite. The play was directed by J.Y. Carter and Steve Deasey.

•Mr. and Mrs. Lindberg Dennis purchased the Houston Café in Red Boiling Springs from Mr. and Mrs. Houston Pedigo. The restaurant as then named Taurus Farms Restaurant.

March 1962

•Winners in the Macon County 4-H Public Speaking contest included Jimmy Jenkins, Lanny Hudson, Ruth Cothron, Linda Carr and Lorene Steen.

•Honor students in Red Boiling Springs High School’s Senior Class included Linda Bohanon, Edward Bartley, Gayla Hewitt and Ina McDonald.

•Pack Porter, Lafayette auto dealer and former state senator, announced his candidacy for representative of the 14th Floterial District, which included Macon, Smith and Trousdale counties.

•Lafayette postmaster Henry C. Johnson was elected president of the Macon County Parks Commission. Other officers elected included Dr. M.E. Painter, M.Z. Hale, Harris Howser and J.W. Taylor.

March 1937

•Members of the Macon County High School Debate Team going into the 10th District Literary League in Cookeville included Freely Cooke, Ottis Carr, Anice Phillips, Hugh Howser, Joe E. Holland and J.F. Goodman.

•Nine Red Boiling Springs students were listed as having perfect attendance. They were Clyde Wilson, Donald Lee York, Fay Joines, Paul Bean, Sarah Driver, Iva Pearl York, Jean Compton, Doris Meador and Georgia Patterson.

•Snow covered the Macon County region, sending farmers into fear that their apple, peach and pear crops were killed in the sub-freezing temperatures.

•Sheriff J.L. Creasey and a Sumner County deputy discovered 70 gallons of whiskey in the back of a pick-up truck on Long Hungary Hill, making it the biggest illegal liquor bust in the county’s history.
