Volunteer State Community College is ranked as the sixth safest college campus in the nation, according to a study by StateUniversity.com. The web site analyzed crime statistics for 450 colleges and universities and assigned a safety rating.

Crimes were weighted according to severity. Vol State had a rating of 99 out of 100.

“The strategy here is to combine manpower and technology,” said Vol State Campus Police Chief William Rogan. “I’m a big believer in the human factor. We’re a relatively small department, but we utilize all of our employees as our eyes and ears.”

The Vol State Campus Police force has six full-time, POST certified police officers and 15 part-time employees. They’re aided by a monitoring and call box system.

“We recently upgraded our closed circuit TV systems,” Rogan said. “We have interior and exterior cameras. We also have a new access control system in our buildings for after hours.”

The Vol State officers work closely with the Gallatin Police Department, Sumner County Sheriff’s Department and Tennessee state law agencies for training and joint response.

“We’re continually doing crisis management training. We try to take away the opportunity for crime, by being proactive and keeping areas secure,” Rogan said.
