HS basketball: RBS boys' fall short

Gordonsville traveled to Red Boiling Springs on Tuesday night and beat the Bulldogs 54-51 in a boys' high school basketball game.

Senior guard Jake Stiles scored a team-high 18 points, and junior guard Andrew Mullinax added 11 points for the Bulldogs (6-3).

Stiles scored with 32 seconds left to pull RBS within two points, 50-48. Stiles was fouled on the shot but missed the free-throw.

Jordan Grace committed his third foul of the game with 21 seconds to play. It was the 10th team foul committed by RBS.

Gordonsville went to the free-throw line and made both shots for a 52-48 lead.

RBS failed to score on its next possession, and Gordonsville went back to the free-throw line and made both shots for a 54-48 lead.

Stiles made a 3-pointer as time expired in Gordonsville’s 54-51 win.

Junior guard Wes Grace was the third Bulldog to score in double figures with 10 points.

Also scoring for RBS were Isaiah Washington (6 points), Shelton Watson (5 points) and Jordan Grace (1 point).

RBS travels to Westmoreland on Dec. 12 before returning home Dec. 17 for the Franklin Classic.

With the holiday tournament season approaching, coach Michael Owens' Bulldogs deserve a second look:

No. 12 Jake Stiles (6-0, Sr., F/G)

He entered the season averaging 11.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and two steals a game. He's extremely quick and good off the dribble. He's athletic, and the Bulldogs need him to have a solid season.

No. 50 Jordan Grace (6-0, Jr., C)

He's a hard worker in the weight room. Aggressive and physical, he needs to continue his offensive improvement in the low-post.

No. 22 Wes Grace (6-0, Jr., PG)

He entered the season averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists while shooting 84.8 percent from the free-throw line. He's a good ball-handler, shooter and plays hard. Entering the season, coaches wanted him to be more of a leader.

No. 25 Jordan Meador (6-0, Jr., F)

He's a solid post-player who can score and rebound. He's got a good work ethic and plays extremely hard. He's athletic with good jumping ability. The Bulldogs need some big minutes out of him this season.

No. 15 Andrew Mullinix (6-0, Jr., G)

Entering the season, he had played 56 career games for RBS, averaging 3.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He handles the ball well. He's a good shooter who sees the floor well.

No. 20 Bryson Tuck (6-0, Jr., G)

He's got a positive attitude and a good work ethic. He continues to work hard and improve on his shooting ability.

No. 11 Isaiah Washington (5-11, Jr., F)

He's a solid low-post player who can score and rebound. He plays extremely hard on the court. He's very athletic and has good jumping ability.

No. 21 Shelton Watson (5-11, Jr.)

He entered the season having played 56 games in his career, averaging 7.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, one assist, 1.1 steals, and shooting 70 percent from the free-throw line last season. He's strong, extremely quick and athletic. The teams depends on him for low-post scoring and rebounding.

No. 33 Jacob Wheat (6-3, Jr., C)

He's a good work ethic and a positive attitude. He's a solid low-post player. He's very strong and has good jumping ability.

No. 30 Matt Brackette (6-0, So., G)

He's a good shooter, passer and a very smart player. He has a great attitude and is a hard worker.

No. 23 Cody Dickens (6-0, So., F)

He's very athletic and plays extremely hard. He has a great work ethic and attitude.

No. 34 Erin Francis (5-9, So., G)

He is very athletic and plays extremely hard. He's got a great work ethic and attitude. He played well at camp last summer and has improved in every area of the game.

No. 14 Zack Roberts (6-0, So. F)

He has a great work ethic and attitude, and he's worked extremely hard in the weight room.

No. 32 Joseph Tackett (5-10, So., F)

He has a great work ethic and plays extremely hard on the court. He rebounds and defends well.

No. 55 David Williams (6-3, So., C)

He's a solid low-post player who can score and rebound. He worked hard in the weight room in the off-season.

No. 10 Matt French (5-10, So., G)

He's good off the dribble and athletic. He plays extremely hard and has a good work ethic. He improved his shooting ability during the off-season.
