A man was flown to Vanderbilt in critical condition after a three-vehicle crash in Lafayette on Saturday night.
Vaughan Banks, age 52, was traveling south on Hwy 10 in a Nissan Altima when he crossed the center line and started traveling south in the northbound lane, said THP Trooper Tracy Donoho.
75-year-old Joseph McGee, who was northbound on Hwy 10 in Buick LeSabre, attempted to avoid collision by swerving to the right. The first vehicle still made contact, sideswiping the second vehicle. The Altima then hit a third vehicle head on; this was a Dodge pickup truck driven by Makayla McCoy, age 19.
Banks was flown by AirEvac to Vanderbilt Medical Center with critical injuries, and remained in critical condition at press time. McGee was transported by relatives to Trousdale County Medical Center with minor injuries. McCoy was transported by ambulance to Macon County General Hospital, complaining of pain. Both McGee and McCoy were released shortly thereafter.
Donoho, who wrote the accident report, said that Banks showed signs of alcohol use on the scene. Charges related to drunk driving are pending.
