Jerry Bilbrey of the Hendersonville Fire Department and Phillip Smith of the Lafayette Fire Department taught a basic fire safety lesson to the children at Miss Pam’s Daycare in Lafayette on Wednesday. They showed a brief educational video and then did a show-and-tell style lesson on smoke detectors, not playing with matches, getting out of a building, and the old stop, drop, and roll.

Bilbrey also suited up for the kids into full fireman getup, which weighs about 75 lbs and is worth roughly $10,000. He explained to kids that if there was a fire, he’d be coming in crawling dressed like this to get them out. He demonstrated. “See? That’s not scary, is it?” he said.

Then the students were allowed to line up for the best part—inspecting the fire engine.
