A woman went into premature labor after being hit by another car while she was waiting at a pharmacy drive-through window last Wednesday.

The accident occurred in the parking lot at the Fred’s Pharmacy in Lafayette. A silver Ford sedan driven by one Mary Jean Francis, 34, came across the parking lot at an angle and struck a pole before hitting the rear of the resting Jeep Cherokee. Francis then allegedly left the scene of the accident in her damaged vehicle and was pursued by an individual who had witnessed the accident. Lafayette police officer Kimball Woodard caught up with both cars nearby, in the parking lot of Francis’s apartment of residence.

“As I was speaking with the driver,” said Woodard in the police report, “she was having extreme trouble keeping her balance and almost fell numerous times… Mrs. Francis spoke with a very slurred speech and admitted to being under the influence of hydrocodone.” Francis also had five prior DUI offenses and a revoked license.

Results about whether the miscarriage was caused by the accident are pending. “The matter is being thoroughly investigated,” said Lafayette Police Chief Ray Amalfitano. “We want to make sure we go over it with kid gloves and that everything is done properly.”

Mary Francis was charged with one count of driving under the influence, one count of driving on revoked/suspended license, one count of failure to report, one count of leaving scene of accident, and one count of financial responsibility violation. Kimball Woodard and G. Flatt were the arresting officers.
