The preliminary hearing of the first degree murder charges against Derek Williamson, 24, 411 Jack Porter Road, Lafayette was held before Sessions Judge Jim Hunter in Gallatin last Wednesday, July 16.

Judge Hunter sent the case against Williamson on to the Sumner County Grand Jury and set his bond at $750,000.

Williamson stands accused of shooting to death 32-year-old Grady Travis Carter in Westmoreland on Wednesday night, June 18 at about 9 p.m. Westmoreland Police arrived at Carter's home in the Ridgecrest subdivision to find Carter lying in the road in front of his home with several gunshot wounds. He was dead on arrival at Sumner Regional Medical Center.

Carter and Williamson were reported to have argued earlier the same day on the telephone and investigators said the former friends were at odds over a women that both men knew.

Witnesses told police and Sumner Sheriff's investigators that the suspect drove into the Ridgecrest neighborhood. When Carter came out of his house and walked down to the street, Williamson allegedly opened his car door and began firing a 40 caliber handgun at the victim.

Police determined that fourteen shots were fired, six striking Carter.

The alleged murder weapon was found a short distance from the scene near the entrance to the Ridgecrest subdivision on the Clyde Wix Road in Westmoreland. Williamson was arrested shortly thereafter.

Williamson remains in the Sumner County Jail with arraignment in Criminal Court set for Friday, August 22, 2008.
