According to a warrant prepared by TBI Agent Steve Huntley and filed in Clay County General Sessions Court, "On or about 7-3-08, Ralph Cox went to the home of Tommy Adams (located between the Oak Grove and Union Hill communities of Clay County). While at the home of Tommy Adams Ralph Cox did produce a handgun and shoot Tommy Adams, killing Tommy Adams."
Both Adams and Cox's wives were present at the time of the early morning fatal altercation, which was reported to be over a dispute concerning allegedly stolen tools and other items.
A E-911 call came in to the Clay County Sheriff's office at about 12:45 p.m. and Clay EMS was dispatched to the residence.
An ambulance transported the mortally wounded Adams to Cumberland River Hospital in Celina.
Ralph "Alphie" Cox Jr. is reported to have fled the scene of the shooting with his wife, Tammy. Macon County Sheriff Mark Gammons and Macon and Clay County deputies searched the northwestern side of Clay County for several hours before finding Cox's pickup truck, out of gas and abandoned on the Old Clementsville Road near the Kentucky line in Clay County.
Sheriff Gammons, Detectives Kimball Hall, Stacy Gann and Darrell Taylor took Cox and his wife into custody without incident when they found them walking down the roadway.
Cox was not armed at the time of his apprehension at about 4:30 a.m.
The Macon County officers transported the Cox couple to Celina and turned them over to the Clay County Sheriff's Department and Cookeville TBI Agent Steve Hartley, who investigated the shooting along with Clay Chief Deputy Brandon Boone.
Cox, a Lafayette mechanic by trade, is being held on first degree murder charges, which the warrant states "was a premeditated murder with the intention of killing Tommy Adams." According to reports, Adams was shot more than one time.
Tammy Cox was questioned by authorities and released late Thursday morning.
