UPDATES (1) SCHOOLS REPORT CARD (2) WRECKS CONTINUE ALL DAY TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13

*MACON COUNTY SCHOOLS RECEIVE STATE REPORT CARD FOR 2006-07 SCHOOL YEAR

Schools in Macon County showed strong progress when the Tennessee Department of Education released it's state report card on schools on Nov. 2. The 2007 report card is based on performance and statistics from the 2006-07 school year.

Shawn Carter, Supervisor of Instruction, said they were "very pleased" as all Macon County Schools met their expected AWP (Average Yearly Progress) with the exception of Macon County High School's graduation rate. He explained that although the graduation rate was lower than expected it did increase in the 2006-07 school year. The graduation rate was at 77.7%.

This puts MCHS at Level 1 school improvement which Carter explained was the "least restrictive stage that you can be at when you don't make AWP two years in a row in the same area." This will enable MCHS to receive help from the state in terms of looking at procedures and how they can improve their graduation rate.

Carter is hopeful the graduation rate will increase due to new methods for students to receive credit such as credit-recovery classes before and after school. He explained that they will continue to add more classes to this program for students who need to make up credits needed to graduate.

Darrel Law, Director of Schools, added that the high school has seen growth in grades and attendance which he credits to being able to identify and mentor students. Law added that problems like the graduation rate have to be addressed before students are in high school.

"The ideal situation is to start with those at-risk students when they are in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. That's where you've got to identify them. It's really tough to turn it around if a young person is well behind as a junior," Law said.

Macon County Junior High Schools in particular showed great improvement in their AWP.

Wynona Clayborne, Supervisor of Special Education, credited this improvement to the fact that the school had received a AWP grant and had used that grant to use different types of materials with the students and hired tutors who worked directly with the students. She added that she feels that teachers have made a conscious effort to make sure they are working at the standards that the state expects.

Full details of the state report card will be available in this week's issue of the Macon County Times.

WRECKS CONTINUED ALL DAY TUESDAY, NOV. 13

A rainy day and wet, oil slick roads contributed to a number of accidents on Tuesday, November 13, several of which were reported earlier in this week's paper. However, at least half a dozen traffic crashes occurred throughout the day and into the evening, including the following:

At about 11 a.m. a head-on collision occurred on Highway 56, the

Gamaliel Road near the state line.

According to THP Sgt. Ashley Mercer's traffic crash report, Roy Comer, 63,

of Tompkinsville, KY was traveling south on Gamaliel Rd. in a 1987 Ford

Mustang. While negotiating a curve, Mr. Comer hit his

brakes and slid into the northbound lane colliding with a 1995 Nissan driven by Mary Deckard, 50, of Red Boiling Springs.

Ms. Deckard is reported to have sustained only minor injuries in the head-on crash.

Then at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday a single vehicle accident occurred on the Rocky Mound Road. In his report THP Trooper Tracy Donoho states that

Alexandria Darnell was traveling south on Rocky Mound Rd. in a 2007 Saturn when her vehicle went off the east shoulder of the road and struck a rock wall at the

entrance to a private driveway, before coming to rest in a field.

Ms. Darrell was not injured in the accident.

The foot of the Lafayette Hill was the scene of two separate accidents late Tuesday afternoon. According to a THP report by Sgt. Ashley Mercer, Steven W. Gregory was traveling north in a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 when he lost control of he vehicle in a left hand curve. The vehicle spun around clockwise, crossed the southbound lane and went off the west side of the roadway where it came to a rest on its side.

Gregory was not injured in the incident. Sheriff's Sgt. Bennie Hudgens and Rescue Squad personnel assisted with traffic control, and Lafayette Police blocked off Hwy. 10 south at the top of the hill until the roadway was cleared. No report of the second Hwy. 10-south accident was available.

A Ferguson Hill Road wreck a short time later Tuesday night resulted in the arrest of the driver, Javier Montes Perez, 33, Trailer 13, Mulberry Street, Lafayette, on DUI and driving on suspended license charges.

Perez apparently left the scene of the one-vehicle crash, but was stopped at the foot of the Lafayette Hill on Hwy. 10 by Sheriff's deputies. Perez and two passengers were taken into custody. The passengers, Carlos Paniagua Lopez, 31, and Andres Garido Carmona, 30, both of Trailer 13, Mullberry Street, were charged with public intoxication.

Bond for Perez was set at $3,500; Lopez and Carmona were released on $250 bond each with a sessions court date of November 28 set for all three men.
