TWO LAFAYETTE POLICE OFFICERS TO GO TO IRAQ

A current officer of Lafayette Police Department Captain Phil Russell and former Lieutenant Matt Looper are both expected to go to Iraq in the near future. Looper resigned from the Lafayette Police Department on Oct. 5th and will leave to report for fourteen days of training on Nov. 3.

Captain Russell was expected to leave on Nov. 3 as well but has not been cleared for leave by the State Department yet. Russell has an alternate date to report of Dec. 1. He explained that "it really could be anything" as the reason why he hasn't been cleared yet.

Looper will first travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia and then travel to Ft. Hood, Texas for his training before traveling overseas to Iraq.

Captain Russell explained that they will serve as police advisers to help train the new Iraqi police force.

Captain Russell has served as a officer at the Lafayette Police Department for thirteen years and Looper had been at the department for twelve years.
