Several motorists stopped to give aid and comfort to Peggy Sue Jones just after 5:00 p.m. Friday July 27, after her 1999 GMC Jimmy crashed into the rock bluff on the north bound side of Galen road.

Traveling north, coming out of a curve, about three miles south of the crossroads intersection of Galen Road, East Stinson Road, and Pumpkintown Road, Jones apparently overcorrected when her right tires went onto the shoulder of the road.

With the overcorrection, the vehicle swerved into the southbound lane, then abruptly right, causing the Jimmy to overturn and roll before stopping upright in a ditch, with the front end striking the rock bluff, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol crash report.

Peggy Sue Jones, 53, of East Stinson Rd., Lafayette, was wearing a seat belt and was conscious following the crash; but her left arm was bleeding, witnesses reported.

An unidentified passer-by offered the shirt off his back to be wrapped around Jones' arm to help stop the bleeding, and another motorist on the scene offered latex gloves to those attempting to help the injured driver until the ambulance arrived, according to witnesses.

Macon County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Bartley was the first officer to arrive on the scene, followed by THP Trooper Neil Ferguson, who investigated the accident.

Macon County EMS responded and Jones was taken by ambulance to a landing site where she was transferred to a helicopter and flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Drugs and alcohol were suspected to be present, according to Trooper Ferguson's observations, but blood test results were not included in the THP report. A reaction to drugs or medication was identified as a contributing condition of the wreck.

Jones was charged with a first offense of driving under the influence, and reckless driving, according to the THP crash report.
