Detective Bill Cothron addresses school board

The Macon County Board of Education met on March 8. Detective Bill Cothron of the Macon County Sheriff's Department told the board about ongoing problems in the schools related to students displaying pornographic materials on their cellular phones. The board members talked at length about the matter and possible ways to address this issue. Detective Cothron will be holding a meeting at the Macon County Junior High at 7 p.m. March 15. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate in learning how to handle this growing problem and educate their children about the risks of having this kind of information on their phones.

The board approved leave requests from Pricilla Taylor, Tina Parrish, and Andrea Tuttle.

The Director of Schools position is open for applications, qualifications are listed at the Board of Education.

Principal J. Thaxton addressed the board concerning 12 seniors, who are failing, and would like to incorporate a program called “time for time”, allowing students to make up missed hours during Senior Week. This program would allow students to participate in graduation. The program passed.

The board approved purchasing a Bard Heating and Cooling unit from Dell Supply and a lawn mower from Macon Small Engine.

David Flynn, principal of Westmoreland, addressed the board with the new 180 day calendar for the school year 07-08.

Cindy Gammons, Title 1 Federal Programs Supervisor, presented the board with three items to be considered:
