The Macon County High School football team was selected as the Award of Merit winner for Region 3 of the National Water Safety Congress.

The award will be presented on March 7, during the International Boating and Water Safety Summit in San Antonio, Texas.

Ranger Jamie Summers reportedly nominated the MCHS football team for the award in recognition of the their outstanding efforts last spring, when the team went to Dale Hollow Lake to promote boating and water safety awareness.

“We didn't realize we had been nominated for the award until we were notified that we had won,” MCHS football Coach Daniel Cook explained.

Ten players and coaches spent half a day around Dale Hollow handing out boating safety flyers and they spoke with boaters about safety, in memory of their teammate Jonathan Hudson, according to Coach Cook.

“This is a good example of athletes learning leadership and athletes learning to be role models,” Coach Cook added.

Although no MCHS students or faculty members will be able to attend the award presentation in San Antonio, they are honored by the recognition. Congratulations team.
