Man reported shot on Public Well Road The sheriff's department reported that a man was allegedly shot in the left shoulder with a high powered rifle on Monday night, Jan. 2. The mn was reportedly shot at a residence on Public Well Road in the Willette Community. The name of the man was not released at press time.

Postage rates increase now in effect “It is the first increase since June 2002,” said Lafayette Post Master Jack Stevens. The cost of mailing a letter increased to 39 cents on Sunday, January 8.

Woman ejected from vehicle in an accident on Highway 10
A three vehicle accident Wednesday, January 11, on Sate Rt. 10 left two drivers injured and the state highway closed for three hours.
Crystal D. Masters, 20, of RBS was injured after she was ejected from her vehicle. Masters was airlifted to Baptist Hospital.
Kevin Sweathomas, the second driver in the accident, was also injured.
The third driver, Timothy Neal, was not injured.

Fire destroys home on Hwy 52
The home of Albert Clay, 6367 Old Highway 52, was destroyed by fire Friday, Jan. 20. The Lafayette Fire Department responded to the call at 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters found the west end of the house in flames. The owner told authorities that the fire had started in his kitchen as a cooking fire.
Commissioners settle lawsuit with Rural Newspapers, Inc. Commissioners reached a final decision Monday night, January 23, at their regular meeting in the lawsuit filed against the county by Rural Newspapers, Inc. In a vote of eleven to seven with two commissioners passing, the county agreed to begin advertising in both papers effective Monday night. This settlement will came at no cost to the county.

Macon County, Cities of Lafayette and Red Boiling Springs receive $1.5 million in Community Development Block Grants The grants for replacement of aging water and sewer lines for the cities of Lafayette and Red Boiling Springs were for $500,000 each. Macon County, Lafayette and red Boiling Springs received three of the fifty-three CDGB grants awarded state wide, and the most granted to any county in the Upper Cumberland Development District.

Where are the RBS gas bills?
RBS Gas Utility customers haven't gotten their gas bills for four months, District Commissioner Phillip Snow reported to the Committee as a Whole in the Feb. 6, meeting. Many gas customers have called RBS City Hall trying to obtain answers.
Five stores selling beer in Lafayette violate their permits
A special meeting of the Lafayette Beer Board was held Tuesday, Jan. 31, because five out of seven stores inside the city limits violated their beer permits.

Cases of TennCare Fraud leads to physicians' arrest Dr. Robert Ladd, who had offices in the Westside and Red Boiling Springs, was released from the Macon County Jail last Tuesday after posting a $250,000 bond. The arrest came following a lengthy investigation where the doctor was accused allegedly of trading drugs for sex. He was also formerly under investigation for allegedly molesting patients.

Fire destroys home in Russell Hill community
The Nesbitt family of Goad Ridge Lane in the Russell Hill community
lost their home when fire completely destroyed the 3,000 square foot
dwelling Saturday afternoon, February 25. A total of 21 thousand gallons of
water was pumped and 10 thousand gallons from a swimming pool reported
Willette Volunteer Fire Fighter Jerry Ray.
MCHS Tigers take 3rd in District Tournament
Colby Stinson led Macon County to a District 7-AA tournament
consolation victory with 18 points, including four three pointers.

American Greetings Building on Market
The 194,000 square foot building went on the market for an asking price
of $1.4 million. Included in the package wad the fully air-conditioned
building which contains a 30,000 square foot basement with dock doors,
the landmark water tower, which supports the communication towers for
Macon County EMS, and its fifty year history.
RBS Lady Bulldogs headed for State Tourney!
The RBS Lady Bulldogs headed to the state tournament for the first time
in 28 years. They have an awesome 30-6 season.

Semi-truck takes down power lines causing outages
Daniel Stamps, 26, from Kentucky wrecked on State Rt. 10 at Jack Porter
Road Saturday, March 11, tearing down several power lines including
Comcast Cable, North Central Telephone and Tri-County Electric.
Approximately 900 Tri-County customers were without power for over two and half
hours due to the accident.

Telephone Co-op pioneer H. Harris Howser dies at age 90
H. Harris Howser Jr., one of the last of Macon County's technological
pioneers, passed away Wednesday at the age of 90. He served as the
General Manager of North Central Telephone Cooperative from its founding in
1951 until his retirement in 1984, a dynamic period of 33 years.

Tragic end to houseboat outing on Dale Hollow Lake
A Macon County High School junior apparently drowned when he fell from
a small boat in which he was a passenger late Monday afternoon, March
27.
Jonathan Hudson, 16, of Lafayette was among a group of high school
students enjoying Spring Break on Dale Hollow Lake when he fell from a
small boat carrying Hudson and its operator out to a houseboat owned by one
of the students' parents.
Macon County recorded first fatality of the year
Patricia Elaine “Patty” Overton, age 27, of Westmoreland passed away
Thursday, March 23, from injuries she sustained in a two vehicle accident
that occurred at Hanestown Road and Cross Road. The was Macon County's
first fatality of 2006. Walter J. Kittrell, the second driver in the
accident, was not injured.

Police Chief levels accusations; Sheriff denies wrongdoing; DA says
witnesses not “credible”
Lafayette Police Chief Jerry Dallas leveled accusations on a Nashville
television station that former Lafayette gun dealer Phillip Looper had
numerous transactions with Sheriff Joe Ferguson in which he provided
“dove ammunition for him to go dove hunting and billed the county for it
as range ammo.”
The Sheriff says he's done nothing wrong and welcomes anybody to look
at any records.

Hail and debris rain on Macon County
Macon County dodged the tornado bullet last Friday as debris from
Gallatin and Hendersonville rained across the area, accompanied by large
hail and some damaging winds.

17-year-old dies of apparent alcohol overdose
Paul Fredrick Kuhn, age 17, of Lafayette was pronounced dead at
Vanderbilt Medical Center after an apparent overdose of alcohol Saturday,
April 15.
Search ends for drowning victim
The search for Macon County High School Junior Johnathan Hudson ended
on Friday, April 14, when his body was recovered with the help of the
Seth Foundation.
RBSHS announces honor students
The top three students of the 2006 graduating class at RBSHS were Erin
Haley Copas, Kim Sutton and heath Dodson.

Witcher recuses self from White DUI case; Gallatin judge appointed
Judge Jimmy White appeared in Macon County General Sessions Court
Wednesday, April 19, but no action was taken after Macon General Sessions
Judge Ken Witcher recused himself from the preliminary hearing
proceedings. The case was then appointed to Sumner County Judge James Hunter to
conduct further action in the case.

TVA transformer failure leaves much of county in the dark Thursday
More than 8,200 Tri-County Electric members were without power when a
huge transformer at the TVA substation on Long Creek Road failed at
about Power was restored to the effected areas at about 11:30 a.m. Thursday
morning.
MCHS Top Ten announced
Valedictorian, Jesse Lane Miller; Salutatorian, Sarah Ann Fitzgerald
and Brandi Nicole Sircy with a GPA of 4.714.
Joe Ferguson, Diane Cook winners in county-wide Republican primary race
Incumbent Sheriff Joe Ferguson won his party's nomination last Tuesday
with 46 percent of the vote, easily defeating Bennie Hudgens, who
received 28 percent while Keith Tillman received 26 percent. Diane Cook
defeated 20-year-incumbent Donnie Morgan with 59 percent of the vote, to
Morgan's 41 percent.

Favorite Teacher Award
Sherry Massey, second grade teacher at Central, was surprised to tears
to find out she'd been voted Favorite Teacher of the Year by students,
parents and other teachers. Charity Loyd, of Capital Cash, presented
Sherry with a plaque of appreciation and a large flower arrangement on
behalf of Capital Cash, tickets for a dinner cruise and to the tennessee
Aquarium on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, and a fine digital
camcorder from Nestle Waters.

Airbags and seatbelts save lives
The airbags deployed and their seatbelts were fastened Saturday
afternoon when Mary Etta Andrews “failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off
the east shoulder of Hwy 10 N striking a utility pole,” according to
THP reports. She was extricated from the vehicle. Willie Andrews, county
commissioner, was also in the vehicle and suffered injuries.

New Lafayette City Council members take oath of office
Ruby Flowers, Ronnie Krantz and Jerry Wilmore were sworn in as
Lafayette City Council members Thursday, May 25. Ms. Flowers was re-elected to
her seat, while Krantz and Wilmore are serving their first terms.

Lafayette Man indicted on internet porn charges
Shane Stenstrom was indicted by the Macon County grand jury and
arrested on charges of 10 counts of sexual exploitation. He was charged after
the FBI presented evidence before the grand jury that Stenstrom did
unlawfully and knowingly possess and purchase material that included a
minor engaged in sexual activity or simulated sexual activity on or about
October 5, 2005.

RBS Council accepts resignation of City Judge
The RBS Council accepted the resignation of City Judge Channie Newberry
at their regular meeting on Thursday, June 8, and passed a motion to
advertise the position.
Holly Doss, June Dairy month chair person was pictured with County
Mayor Glen H. Donoho who signed a proclamation in celebration of June Dairy
Month.

Lafayette businessman dies in fiery Allen Co. accident
James Albert (Al) Smith, 52, of Lafayette died early Tuesday morning
when his Ford Explorer struck a bridge abutment and burst into flames.
The 7 a.m. accident occurred on Kentucky Highway 101 North of
Scottsville.

Two still hospitalized, four treated after E-coli outbreak at daycare
Six confirmed cases of a serious E. coli infection and four additional
“suspected” cases are being looked into by the state Department of
Health. All of the infected children, ages 5 and under, attended the same
Key Road day care facility operated by Paulette Colter.

Motorcycle accident claims life of James Waylon Arnett
James Waylon Arnett, 29, of Moss was killed Thursday, June 29, when the
motorcycle he was riding left the roadway and crashed.

120 Marijuana plants found in Rocky Mound community
More than 120 hearty marijuana plants were discovered in the Rocky
Mound community, by Macon County Sheriff's Detectives Jimmy Hardin and Bill
Cothron, on Tuesday morning.

James Thaxton hired new MCHS principal
James (J.) Thaxton was hired this week as the new principal at the high
school for the 2006-2007 school year. Thaxton has 28 years of
experience in education and eight years in an administration position.

Two vehicle accident claims one life
Cindy Myers, age 41, died of injuries she sustained in a two vehicle
accident Saturday, July 22. Myers' vehicle was struck while traveling on
Hwy 10 North at approximately 10:55 p.m. by a 2001 Dodge pickup truck
driven by 18-year-old Brandon Underwood of Lafayette.

On Tuesday, August 1, members of the 678th Personnel Services Battalion
left the Army Reserves Center in Nashville it took with it two soldiers
with family ties to Macon County: Sgt. Geffrey Regan and Sgt. Robert

races
-Billy Wilmore and Jimmy Cook win school board seats
Shelvy Linville elected as County Mayor, Mark Gammons elected as
Sheriff, Rick Gann beat out incumbent Jennifer Hudson for Circuit Court Clerk
and Diane Cook was elected Trustee.

Two injured in four-wheeler accident Sunday afternoon
Ashley Gilbert, 17, suffered severe lacerations, a broken shoulder
blade and a partially collapsed lung in the accident that occurred about 4
p.m. Sunday afternoon on the Hance Hollow Road near the Macon and
Jackson County lines. A second youth, Bobby Knight, 15, of RBS, is reported
to have suffered a broken arm in the accident.

Kara Harper named MCHS Homecoming Queen
Kara Harper has been named the 2006 Macon County High School Homecoming
Queen. The court included Hunter Shrum, Elizabeth Cothron, Brittney
Wilmore, Christina Yokley, Makayla Davis and Brooke Bowers.
Maurice Massey passes on at age 74
Maurice Massey, a man described by many who knew him as “as a classic
gentleman” and “basically a great fellow,” died in his sleep early
Saturday morning at his home in Brentwood, after two decade long struggle
with cancer. He was 74 years old.

Fleetwood's Lafayette plant announced their closing in early September
according to a corporate announcement made. The closing affected
approximately 100 people and several office workers.

The 13th annual Makin' Macon Fit was scheduled to kick off Saturday,
September 9th, at 7:30 a.m.
New county officials were pictured taking the oath of office. Those
pictured included Sheriff Mark Gammons, County Mayor Shelvy Linville,
Circuit Court Clerk Rick Gann, and County Trustee Diane Cook.

Motorist faces charges after striking bicyclist
Teresa J. Moore was charged with driving on suspended license and
leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries after she attempted to
overtake Jackie N. Dunlap, age 53, while participating in the 33 mile
bike tour as part of the Makin' Macon Fit Festival. Dunlap suffered minor
injuries.

Lafayette man dies in one vehicle crash in Trousdale County
Ray Gene Woodard, Jr., age 28, of Lafayette was killed in a one vehicle
accident Sunday, at 4 a.m. on State Rt. 10 in Trousdale County. The
Chevrolet truck was traveling north on State Rt. 10 when the vehicle ran
off the right side of the road, traveled down the ditch line 125 feet
hitting a culvert, flipped over onto it's top in the road before coming
to a stop, according to THP reports.

Kara Mowell was crowned Miss Macon County High School, 2006, at the
pageant held Saturday, September 23.
Two Lafayette men airlifted to Vanderbilt after Monroe County Kentucky
wreck
Michael D. McLeary and David L. Krantz, both of Lafayette, were flown
to Vanderbilt Medical Center for treatment of injuries they received in
a two vehicle crash on KY 87, five miles wet of Fountain Run, KY.

Four die in vehicle wreck in Monroe County Monday evening
Four people were killed, including a married couple from Red Boiling
Springs, and a fifth individual was injured in a three vehicle collision
on Kentucky state Highway 163 October 2.
Larry D. Hawkins and Dimple M. Hawkins of Red Boiling Springs, Robert
E. Calvin of Tompkinsville and and Grover Evans were all pronounced dead
from injuries they sustained in the accident.

motorcycle wrecks
Michael Veatch, a deputy with the Macon County Sheriff's department was
injured in a four-wheeler wreck about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 5, on
the Williams Road.
Bennie Hudgens, a detective with the sheriff's department and his wife
Sherry were injured when they wrecked while traveling on a motorcycle
on Old Hwy 52.

Motorcycle wreck reported Monday
Kyle Witlow, 18, Westmoreland suffered back and leg injuries when he
was thrown from his Suzuki motorcycle as the vehicle ran off the right
side of the road as it was traveling west at about 3:25 p.m. on Monday,
November 6. He was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center by
helicopter for treatment of his injuries.

Missing teen returns home unharmed
Ashley Diodato, the 16-year-old Macon County girl who was reported
missing from her mother;s home over three weeks ago, was located, un
harmed, in Shelbyville, according to the Macon County Sheriff's Department.

Tragic accident claims the life of a young husband and father
Michael Alan Cassetty, 26, of Lafayette, passed away at Vanderbilt
University Medical Center on November 16, less than a week after being
injured in a tragic accident on the job. He was an employee of J.C. Moss
Electric Company in Hendersonville and was on a routine service call at a
Madison strip center, November 10 when something went terribly wrong.
Michael left behind a wife and two small children.
Jack Leath, former Election Commissioner, passes away
Jack Leath, age 75, of the Siloam Community of Westmoreland passed away
Monday, November 20th, after a long battle with cancer.

Fire Destroys Westside Cabinet Shop
Firefighters from Lafayette, Westmoreland, South Allen County and
Southeast Allen County Kentucky, responded to the fire at Hackert and Sons'
Cabinets located at 2948 Rocky Mound Rd. The family business was
completely destroyed by the fire. The Lafayette Fire Department reported
using over 14,000 gallons of water between the time they arrived and when
they departed just before 8:30 p.m.

New plant manager for Nestle Waters Bottling Facility is Mark
Smidebush. He is am experienced plant manager coming from Ocean Spray
Cranberries, Inc. in Florida, where he held overall responsibility for fruit
processing for Ocean Spray brands.

Dixon Springs “Drug Cave” house burns
State and local authorities are investigating a Tuesday night, December
5, fire that destroyed a $1 million gated A-frame house in the Cato
community of Trousdale County. Arson was strongly suspected. The home hid
an entrance to an underground marijuana growing operation whose owner
was arrested in December 2005. This was the first of two fires which
broke out at the same time and in the same general area.

Deputy injured in chain reaction wreck
Macon Sheriff's Deputy Terry Atkins, 36, of Lafayette was transported
to Vanderbilt Medical Center Friday afternoon following an accident
which “totaled” his 2000 Ford Crown Victoria patrol car. He was the only
person injured in the three vehicle accident. A 17-year-old juvenile and
18-year-old Alaina Gregory were also involved in the accident.
