Lafayette businessman dies in fiery Allen Co. accident

Lafayette business man James Albert (Al ) Smith, age 52, of Williams Road in Lafayette died early Tuesday morning, June 20, 2006 in a fiery one vehicle crash on Kentucky Highway 101.

Smith's vehicle, a black 2003 Ford Explorer, traveling north on KY 101, dropped off the right shoulder, and struck the bridge over the Barren River that connects Warren and Allen Counties.

After hitting the bridge, Smith's Ford Explorer re-entered the roadway, came to a stop and caught fire. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

Mr. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Allen County Coroner, Danny Bridgeman.

Kentucky State Trooper Brad Stevenson was the investigating officer.

Smith was owner and CEO of USD-2, a printing and silk screen business located in the Lafayette Industrial Park at 460 Industrial Drive.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time.
