Industrial water rates in Red Boiling Springs were done away with at the regular city council meeting last Thursday, March 9. At the same meeting, the city limits began to expand.
The current $2.04 per thousand gallons industrial water rate that has been in effect since 1998 was done away with by unanimous vote, after the motion was made by council member Jimmy Roark and seconded by Bobby Etheridge to write an ordinance to do so.
That means Nestle will be paying the same $5.44 rate that all RBS water customers outside of the city limits pay.
The actual rate change will take effect 10 days after the ordinance is passed on second reading during the council's regular meeting on May 11.
This rate change should put Red Boiling Springs' water system in the black, and also cover the 20% increase to account for the depreciation of the system that was recommended by Kenny Patterson, of Environmental Consultant Services, at the February meeting.
The city itself began taking on a new shape after council members voted to start the process of annexing the Hwy. 52 by-pass and surrounding land.
Beginning on the by-pass at the Carthage Road and going east to Hwy. 151( also known as the North Springs Road), the proposed annexation will take in everything 500 feet south from the center of the road. To the north, the annexation includes everything from the center of the road to the existing city limits, which is a sort of pie-shaped wedge of mostly farm land.
The process begins with city attorney Jon Wells obtaining legal descriptions and beginning a plan of services for houses that will be included in the annexation.
Looking ahead, Wells advised the council that a public hearing will be necessary after the legal descriptions are obtained.
He also advised that the... county can block any proposed annexation after being notified of the city's plans.
