David Oliphant, 45, walked out of the Macon County Jail and escaped into the woods surrounding the facility Wednesday night, September 28.

According to Chief Deputy Robin Gregory, Oliphant went through several secured doors to escape. This fact is being investigated by the proper authorities.

Officers searched the immediate area upon notification that the white male had escaped.

Chief Deputy Gregory said, "We feel that he is of no danger to the public. He was originally charged with violation of check law and then being held on violation of probation." Oliphant is a local inmate.

According to Chief Gregory, Oliphant was found in Jackson County walking on the side of the road. He was picked up by authorities in Jackson County and taken into custody. Sgt. Kimball Hall went to Jackson County to pick up Oliphant. He now remains lodged in the Macon County Jail on a $10,000 bond where he was charged with misdemeanor escape. He has a court date of October 5.
