- LPD warns 'speeders beware'
Lafayette Police Chief Jerry Dallas came before the Lafayette City Council to request that the speed limit be changed from 35 mph on Brattontown Circle to 25 mph.
Chief Dallas stated that he had received several complaints from the residents of that area due to the increase in traffic. He reported that motorists are now using the new subdivision as a "go between" from the west side of the county to the north side of the county. The traffic has increased and residents of both Brattontown Circle and Deerfield Farms are concerned. He presented a petition signed by 23 voters requesting that the speed limit be changed.
Chief Dallas said that the speed limit had never been changed since it was the original road from Lafayette to Westmoreland.
He said that after he received several complaints, he and several officers patrolled the area and did give several tickets to motorist who were speeding.
The council moved to put into effect Tuesday night the new law. The street department was instructed to replace the signs.
The council also agreed to advertise for bids for sanitation department equipment. This is modern equipment according to Mayor Bill Wells. The new equipment would be a one-man system with one arm that would pick up the trash can so that the cans would not have to be picked up by hand anymore.
Each active resident would receive one 96-gallon can. The city would furnish the first can. Each additional can would be $50. They would still furnish pickup behind the house, with the old system. They will advertise for bids for the new pickup truck. The council agreed that they would need to educate the public. They hope to start the new pick up before the end of the year. Three people will be trained to operate the new system.
Pool hours have now changed from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. to 12 noon to 5 p.m. This would change the pay rate of the pool manager to a six hour day rate of $39, five hour rate of $32.50 and a seven hour rate of $49.50. The reason for the change is at parents' request.
The next city council meeting will be held Tuesday, August 2.
