As most of you know by now, Truett will retire from the newspaper business on Friday, July 8th. I, too, am retiring on Monday, July 11th.

The decision to retire was an extremely hard one for Truett and a sad one, to, as he has worked since he was 12 years old. He first started work earning $1.00 each Saturday helping a neighborhood boy cut grass. He would go home and iron his dollar bill before he stashed it in its hiding place!

So with his long work history, 40 years of it in the newspaper business, it was with real sadness that he decided that it was time to take life easier. His health, which has not been the best in recent months, strongly influenced his decision. Maybe with rest and being away from the stress of this business, it will improve.

I, too, am retiring, but this will be my second time. When I left the teaching profession 13 years ago, I did not intend to work again. But Truett asked me to work with him, and how could I turn down the man who cooks for me?

This time, though, my retirement is for good. Since I had open heart surgery last October, I tire very easily. So I, too, am ready to rest and recover.

We are both looking forward to weeks of every day being Saturday, to spending more time with our grandson, and to seeing our new grandchild come into the world in December. I have a lot of books that need reading and Truett has a lot of plans for the yard and house. Also, we have people that we would like to visit and places that we would like to see. This just seems the best time in our life to get all these things done...once our health is restored.

We are deeply grateful to all of you who have been so kind to us and so very good to us. You have come into our lives and touched our hearts and we will not forget you or your many kindnesses to us.

I am so very glad that we chose to make Macon County our home, for we have lived among and worked with some of the finest people on God's earth.

God bless each of you.
