Those of you who read this column on a regular basis know that I recently had a manicure and a pedicure done at a local shop using a gift certificate that Truett had given me for Christmas

. I told you then that I enjoyed that treat so much that I went back to work telling Truett that he had started a bad habit for me.

Well, this past week I had a manicure and a pedicure done at a different shop, which I also enjoyed immensely. Believe me, those pleasures to the 20 digits can definitely be habit forming! And, yes, I will be going back...weekly. I confess that I did set up a standing weekly appointment!

I had that treat last Wednesday morning and later in the day Truett was out putting papers in racks when he heard Tim Perry, one of Lafayette's finest men in blue, call out, "Truett, I saw Barbara's car in front of the tattoo parlor this morning. Was she getting a tattoo?"

When Truett told me that, I said, after I stopped laughing, "Well, I guess that I will have to start parking down at La Tia's and walking down to Debbie's shop!"

It is not that I have anything against tattoos. They are just not my style. And I have nothing against other people who like them and decorate their bodies with that art. That is their business. I just don't care for them on my body.

Okay, I confess that I am terrified of needles. When I go to have my blood drawn for analysis, which I have to do every three months, I always ask to have the first appointment of the day. That is because I get so panicky I nearly pass out and I don't want to have to sit in the lobby waiting and thinking about the needle. Other people in the lobby might see me pass out before I even get called back to the lab. And that would be truly embarrassing!

The closest that I ever came to getting anything that even resembled a tattoo was one time when I did something really, really, really stupid and asked Truett to carve his initials on my arm. I know! I know! That was a dumb thing to do, but I was only 17 at the time and didn't know any better.

Truett has always carried a knife. So on one occasion he had his knife out whittling on something and I said, "Carve your initials on my arm." He didn't want to, but I talked him into it. He kind of just scratched them on, not really "carving" them. As a matter of fact, there was no scar made and to look at my arm, you would never know that it had been done.

But seeing the blood and feeling the scratching of the knife scared me and made me sick...so much so that to this today I am terrified of any kind of needle and of anything that might cause me pain or to bleed. When I have to have an IV done, I almost have to be sedated. I am so bad that I make screaming, crying children look good!

Of course Truett never knew about my reaction that day and it was only after we were married that he learned about the fear that it had caused me which would last for the rest of my life. I pretended a bravery that I certainly didn't feel at the time and I pretended that I thought that I was so cool. Man, I should have been an actress!

So, no thank you for tattoos. The rest of you go right ahead, however, and I will just admire yours and your bravery. And anytime that you see my car parked in front of the tattoo parlor, I will actually be inside the shop next door getting my nails done!

Now before I close, I would like to remind you of two things. First, remember that this Friday, February 4th, is National Wear Red for Women Red. This is the day set aside to call everyone's attention to women's heart health. Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in this country, and women and those who love them must be educated to learn to recognize the symptoms of heart trouble and the importance of responding to those symptoms. So get out your best red outfit and wear it Friday in honor of all women and in memory of those who have passed on from heart disease.

Second, all you parents and grandparents need to remember that this Thursday is also the deadline for our Valentine Hearts page that will be in next week's paper. Don't let your sweetheart be left out. Bring us a picture of your child or grandchild with his name and age on the back of the picture. Also, on the back put either the parents' name or the grandparents'. Please, remember that we have room for only one or the other, not both. And while some children have more than one set of parents or more than one set of grandparents, we can put only one set under the picture. A picture may have two children in it, if the children are close together. Any picture that has more than two children in it will not re-produce as well in the paper, for we will have to reduce the picture so small to get all the children in that the faces will be very small. A picture with no more than two in it works much better. So remember that deadline...Thursday, February 3rd, at 4:30. The price is the same as last year, $14.00 per heart.

So, get your red outfit ready to wear Friday and bring your sweetheart's picture in anytime this week, but Friday at 4:30 is the absolute deadline!

See you later...in red!
