Slate was the mayor of the city from 1993 to 1995 and served on the Red Boiling Springs City Council from 1975 to 1977. He was a former police officer and a fireman for Red Boiling Springs. He served as the water commissioner from 1977 to 1989.
Slate, a native of Macon County, was the son of the late Dewey and Edith Lyons Slate. He was married to Jacquelyn Knight, who survives, on September 28, 1945.
He was a member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors beside his wife of 58 years include: daughter and son-in-law; Kathy and Lanny Hudson, sons and daughter-in-laws; Richard and Debbie Slate, and David and Margie Slate, sisters; Naomi Ford, Emodene Slate, granddaughter; Shena Slate, grandsons; Brandon Hudson, Kevin, Chris, Chandler, and Dustin Slate, great grandchildren, Justin, Amber, and Kayle Slate.
Funeral services for James Slate were conducted Wednesday, July 14, from the chapel of Phillip Anderson & Son Funeral Home in Red Boiling Springs with interment in the Whitley Cemetery.
