It seems impossible that the commissioners will balance without raising taxes on the county. The cost of living has increased and many departments feel they just cannot work with the same amount of money as they received last year.
The budget committee will meet June 28 to once again see if they can balance without increasing taxes.
Director of Schools, Mike Prock, presented a General Purpose School Budget Amendment to move $270,000 of undesignated fund balance fund to regular capital outlay for $22,000 in architects fees for the construction at Westside, $5,000 for engineering services to look into repairing the bleachers at Macon County High School's football field. He requested an amount of $170,000 for the building of a new sports building at the high school. Prock reported that this would be used for track, cross country, dressing rooms, and would also have bathrooms for teams. Building improvements totaling $48,000 were also included to go to the current high school field house. This motion was not passed. A tie vote was broken by County Mayor Glen Donoho. He stated he could not vote for $170,000 to construct a sports building when he felt the money could be used to provide insurance for school employees that do not have insurance.
Prock stated he would return to the school board and they would present another solution at the next meeting.
All other budget amendments were passed on to the full body.
Resolutions one and three were approved and deferred to the full body. A motion was made by Commissioner Tony Boles to postpone resolution two, a resolution to allow the Macon County schools' Federal Project Fund be approved for separate projects within the fund by the Macon County Board of Education.
Commissioner Anna Dean Carter stated that she did not have enough information to vote yes for this resolution and requested that the school board present a better resolution at the next meeting.
Minutes from the May 17 court meeting, loss control committee meeting from May 25, budget committee from May 17 and planning commission from April 20, were approved and deferred to the next meeting.
Commissioner Phil Spears spoke on behalf of residents on Tuck Road. He requested that the speed limit be changed from 55 mph to 25 mph due to the width of the road. It was determined by the commissioners that a petition would need to be signed in favor of the lowered speed limit. The residents stated they would return on June 28, with a petition.
Commissioners agreed to postpone the next meeting to the fourth Monday in June to push the meeting closer to the end of the fiscal year. The next scheduled meeting for the county commissioners is June 28, at 7 p.m.
