Lona Vinson, Chamber Secretary, called me this morning (Tuesday) to say that the Hwy 52 Yard Sale last weekend was a success. According to Lona, e-mails to the Macon County website indicated a favorable reaction.

Lona said that a great deal of money was brought into the county-- purchasing gasoline and foods at the restaurants.

Surely those of you who frequently come by the Times office will be pleased to see that the "cane-patch" around our building has been cut.

I loaded my lawn tractor in the pickup last Thursday and brought it to town. I was having a pretty tough time cutting the thick, vine-laced grass that was well over knee high. Suddenly out of a cloud of dust came Richard Thomas, mounted atop a machine the likes of which I'd never seen.

I'd guess he was doing over 30 mph when he crossed the street between American Exteriors and the Times property. With each hand gripping the side controls, he and the Dixie Cutter plowed into the tall weeds, cutting and spinning about like a top. I was doing good to get out of his way.

Shoot, before I could pick up the pop bottles and burger wrappers, Richard had finished the Times and was making his rounds across the street on Macon Dept. Store's parking lot. In less that a couple of minutes, he was all done and on his way back to his shop.

Richard, I didn't get to thank you, but we certainly appreciate your 'good neighborly deed'. Without your help, I'd probably be still out there, putting along on my 12 hp Weedeater, flinching everytime I hit a big rock.

Hats off to Director of Schools Mike Prock, the Board of Education, school adminstrators, teachers -- anyone involved with the education system in this county. The Gateway Assessment scores shows a great deal of improvement.

You all should be very encouraged.

It was a pleasure to read that the Board of Education has approved funds for the Imagination Library.

It is also a pleasure to tell you that our circulation campaign, Nov. and Dec. of 2003, in which this newspaper donated $8.00 to the Imagination Library for every new subscriber, won us an award from the Tennessee Press Association. It was one of the best house promotions by a weekly newspaper in our division (over 5,000 paid subscribers).

I was very pleased with this recognition and appreciate the response from our subscribers.

An actual quote that should make you feel brilliant -- "Your food stamps will be stopped effective March 1992 because we received a notice that you have passed away. May God bless you. You may reapply if there is a change in your circumstances." -- Department of Social Services, Greenville, SC
