The Macon County Board of Education met in regular session on May 13, 2004.
Appearing before the board with year end reports were school health service employees Lenore Wix and Brenda Holland. Both gave the board good reviews of the health programs offered in the school systems. During the school year school nurses saw a total of 12,578 students for illnesses and injuries. 1,255 were sent home, 753 doses of medicine were administered and over 8,000 screenings were conducted including vision, hearing, and blood pressure.
Debbie Wheeler also gave a year end report on the academy banking program. She stated, "It has been very successful, we have no problems at all and we are getting positive feedback from the program. We are very proud of the success and are looking forward to improving it during the second year."
The board also approved a donation in the amount of $5,000 to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Every child in Macon County will receive one book per month until they reach five years of age. The reading program has received funding from different sources in the county for its support.
