Deputy Griggs and Sheriff Joe Ferguson were able to locate the two children, Damien Shutt, 9, and Brittany Edwards, 14, unhurt in the west side of the county after the Macon County Sheriff's Department received a tip from a woman who had heard the Amber Alert on television and stated she could see the truck outside her home late Monday morning.
Reportedly the two children left their home in Robertson County late Sunday night.
Deputy Griggs stated that after the dispatcher received the call he traveled to 10761 Old Highway 52 to a Neal residence where the truck was reportedly last seen.
Deputy Griggs stated that he surveyed the residence and did not see the vehicle. He went to turn around at Siloam Church when a vehicle, matching the description of the truck, pulled in front of Deputy Griggs.
He then ran the license plate number and the tag came back to a 1984 gray in color vehicle. Because the plates did not match the vehicle, he then pulled the it over to the side of the road. Two male subjects reportedly exited the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle allegedly stated that his name was Chris Howard, age 18. At that time, Howard was placed in the back of the patrol car.
Deputy Griggs then went to the truck and spoke with the female inside the truck. She stated her name was Brittany Howard. He then went back to his patrol car and asked Howard what the females last name was. Chris then reportedly stated that he did not know her last name.
At that time Sheriff Joe Ferguson began to speak with Brittany. Deputy Griggs then reviewed the Amber Alert picture and observed that the female in the truck matched the description of the missing girl.
Deputy Griggs returned to the truck and questioned the female again further. She then stated that she could lie no longer that her real name was Brittany Edwards.
Sheriff Ferguson then asked where her brother, Damien was located. She advised that he was at a home on that same street. He was later located at that residence.
The second male in the vehicle, Freddy Neal, was released, after giving a statement, and will not face charges. He stated that Howard and the juveniles arrived at his home Sunday night around 9:30 p.m. He did not question the children nor had he seen any reports on the television Monday morning.
Sheriff Ferguson transported the juveniles to the Macon County Jail where they were later reunited with their parents.
Howard was transported to the Macon County Sheriff's Department by Deputy Griggs where he was held for Robertson County.
He will reportedly face charges of motor vehicle theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Edwards reportedly stated that she went willingly with Howard. It is unknown at this time whether Howard will face further charges.
Howard reportedly came to Lafayette with the juveniles to visit friends from school.
Sheriff Ferguson said, "I am glad the kids are okay and are back with their parents and that they were unhurt."
