Steven Morris Shelton, age 19, of Spring Creek Road, was arrested and charged on Wednesday, July 16, by Lafayette Police Lt. Byran Satterfield with aggravated burglary and theft over $500.
The arrest stems from a burglary report made by LPD Officer Adam Swindle in May of 2003.
Officer Swindle's report stated that Billy Stafford, of Lafayette, reported that someone had entered his apartment on May 23 and stolen a .30/.06 military rifle valued over $500.
The case was turned over to the investigation department at the LPD.
It was then discovered on June 4 that the rifle had been pawned at a pawn shop located out of town.
Lt. Satterfield and Detective Stacy Gann recovered the rifle on June 5.
The arrest of Shelton came after Detective Gann received an auto burglary call July 16, at 114 Public Square. A carton of cigarettes had been stolen out of a vehicle belonging to Trena Kuera.
Kuera reportedly saw an individual reach into her vehicle and take the cigarettes. The suspect was believed to be in a red Toyota Celica.
Steven Wayne Reid, 20, of Cedar Bluff Road, was brought in for questioning concerning the auto burglary. After an interview was conducted, Reid was arrested by Detective Gann. He was charged on July 16 with theft under $500 and auto burglary.
Information then led authorities to arrest Shelton for the stolen rifle.
General Sessions court date is set for Shelton and Reid for August 13. Bond for Shelton was set at $3500. Bond for Reid was set at $1500.
