The scheduled trial of former Macon County Commissioner Steven Smith on charges of child rape has been continued until October of this year.

Steven Smith, who at one time represented the seventh district, turned himself in at the Macon County Sheriff's Department in early February 2001, following a TBI investigation into allegations that he abused a young girl.

The investigation involving the charges against Smith was conducted by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agent Russ Winkler. Smith was being investigated due to allegations he had abused a female child under the age of thirteen. The incidents were alleged to have covered a number of years.

Smith surrendered to Agent Winkler on February 5, 2001, at the Sheriff's Department. He was officially indicted by the Macon County Grand Jury on six counts of child rape during their February 2001 session.

The trial had been scheduled to be held this week, but was continued late last week.

According to records in the office of Macon County Circuit Court Clerk Jennifer Hudson, a trial in the case is now set for Oct.
