Atwell, former Lafayette Fire Chief, was nominated by Council person Georgia McClard and was sworn in by City Reporter Annette Morgan after a unanimous vote by the council.
A full agenda was presented to the council with opening business being to dispense of the reading of the minutes of the January 7 regular meeting and the January 21 special called meeting. The council then moved to adopt the minutes of the January 7 and January 21 meeting.
Approximately nine bids were presented to the council in regard to the three year mowing contract. After a lengthy discussion to ensure that the lowest bid met all the required specifications it was decided by the council to go with the second lowest bid. The lowest bid did not meet all the requirements.
Richard's Mowing of Westmoreland received the bid and will meet with the Mayor at a later date to sign a contract for three years.
Bids were then opened by the council for the proposed playground equipment at the Lafayette City Park.
Lafayette Recreation Committee representative, Bryan West, stated that the low bid did not meet the specifications laid out in the bid. It was then decided by the council to accept the bid by Just for Play with a price of $59,860.
West stated that he would contact the company immediately and hoped to have the park ready in four to six weeks.
Professional Engineering Services reported to the council that they were ready to accept bids on the proposed restrooms at Key Park. It was decided that council would advertise for bids and open them at a special called meeting March 17.
The council also decided to place Professional Engineering Representative Ricky White in charge of handling all concerns regarding the restrooms at Key Park.
Wastewater Superintendent Jeff Roark presented updates on the Brattontown and Mag-A-Mor Sewer projects. Approximate cost to date for the Brattontown project is $56,000 and for Mag-A-Mor is $36,000.
The council moved to hire John Hahn to appraise the property on Hwy 52 By-Pass, formerly Wee Care Day Care, at the suggestion of Robert Hodges.
The council also moved to approve annual pay increases for Tina Long LPD, and Jeremy Keene Waste Water Collections Department.
The council moved to allow Leonard Berry, NMT Web Design, L.L.C. to make an official website for the City of Lafayette.
The members then heard from Gail Waldrop a resident of the Flippen Drive area. She stated that for several years she has had a problem with water drainage in her yard. She reported that the water is causing problems with neighbors and has cracked the foundation of several homes in the area. She stated that this was an ongoing problem and if the City would not take care of it she would. She requested permission to dig a ditch around her yard.
The council voted to review the old maps to see if the street had an existing ditch before any action was taken.
This will be reviewed at the next meeting scheduled for March 4.
