Steven Smith, former seventh district county commissioner, was ordered during the first day of Macon County Criminal Court by Judge J.O. Bond to appear for a special trial June 17 and 18, 2003, in regards to the alleged charges of child rape.

An article first ran in the Macon County Times in February 2001 stating that Smith had turned himself in to the Macon County Sheriff's Department following a TBI investigation into allegations that he abused a 15 year old girl.

The investigation on Smith was conducted by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agent Russ Winkler. Smith turned himself in February 5, 2001, to Agent Winkler at the Macon County Jail. He was later released on a $50,000 bond.

During the February 2001 session of the Macon County Criminal Court, Smith was charged with six counts of rape of a child.

According to a report from the Circuit Court Clerk's office, Smith's trial has been set for June 17th and 18th.

Smith has retained Jacky O. Bellar as his attorney.
