Mrs. Gaydell Bennett of South Carthage died at the age of 74 at 1:00 pm Wednesday afternoon May 15, 2002 at the Carthage General Hospital following an extended illness.

Services were conducted on Saturday morning at 11:00 am by Stan Stevenson from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial was in the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bennett was married december 4, 1947 to William Vaxter Bennett. The had an infant that died at birth.

Born in Jackson County on June 17, 1927, she was one of eleven children of the late Hubert Gordon and Susie Thomas Dixon.

She was a member of the Peyton Creek Baptist Church at Monoville for 63 years, having been baptized at the age of 22 in 1939.

She was retired from Carthage General Hospital where she worked in the dietary department for twenty eight years, beginning in 1969 and retiring in 1997.

Surviving in addition to her husband of fifty four years are six children and their spouses, Jr. and Joyce Bennett of South Carthage, Sue and Bernice Washer of Lock 7 Community, Cricket and Larry Martin of Defeated Creek, Joyce and Phil Bains of Hiwassie, Steve and Glenda Bennett and Renae and Brandon Powell of Defeated Creek; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Cox, Janet Glover, Daniel Bains, Stacy Bennett, Susan Bains, Jamie and Steven Bennett, Jason Powell; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Patsy Graham, Virginia Fisher, Glenda Reed all of Hartsville; brother, Thomas Dixon of Defeated Creek.
