The sound of soothing gospel and country music echoed across Key Park, the sound of gunfire echoed across Eastern Lafayette Saturday Morning as the First Annual Jett Williams Law Enforcement Shoot Out began.

Law enforcement officers from around the area gathered at the event sponsored by North Central Security Systems for a day of shooting to benefit the "Jett Williams Scholarship Fund."

The event was held at the Lafayette Police Department Pistol Range. Approximately twenty officers and a host of spectators were on hand to participate in this NRA approved event.

The National Rifle Association of America sent representative Patricia Zollman, Manager of the Police Competitions Dept. of the NRA, to officiate the event. Lt. Vic Donoho of the Tennessee Highway Patrol led the participants in prayer before the event began. North Central Security Systems provided a courtesy booth with free cold drinks, coffee, donuts, and various snacks.

The course of fire was the NRA Law Enforcement Service Pistol category consisting of individual and team events using semi-automatic pistols an /or revolvers. Distances for this shoot ranged from 3 to 25 yards. Strong hand standing, offhand standing and barricade positions standing and kneeling were used.

The competitors were: Captain Phil Russell, Lt. Matt Looper, Patrol Officers Junior Fields, William Head and Ray Amalfitano, of the Lafayette Police Department; Sergeant Rex Prince, Sergeant Butch Avera, Troopers Shannon Brinkley, Ted Douglas and Ashley Mercer of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Constables Ken Miller and Tom Dallas of Macon County, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Officer Jim Dooley, and members of the 15th Judicial Drug Task Force. Fees for this event were $25.00 for the individual matches and $20.00 for each shooter in the team event. Deneshia Hesson was on hand to collect the match fees and along with Chief Jerry Dallas, who acted as the senior range officer and event coordinator, tabulated scores for each match.

Every shooter received a commemorative North Central Security Systems/Jett Williams Inaugural Shoot Out Polo shirt.

Trophies and a serialized, commemorative North Central Telephone Cooperative/Case XX knife were awarded as follows:

Semi-automatic pistol class: 1st place-Trooper Shannon Brinkley; 2nd place- Sergeant Rex Prince; 3rd place- Lt. Matt Looper.

Revolver Class: 1st place-Trooper Shannon Brinkley; 2nd place- Constable Tom Dallas; 3rd place- Sergeant Butch Avera.

Team Event: 1st place-Captain Phil Russell and Lt. Matt Looper; 2nd place-Constables Ken Miller and Tom Dallas; 3rd place- Sergeant Rex Prince and Trooper Ted Douglas.

Top shooter of the day, Trooper Shannon Brinkley faced off in a shooting match with Jett Williams as the final event. Jett Williams was the winner of the final match against the Trooper.

Jett Williams, an active shooter herself, commented that she hopes this will be a starting point for other shooting events in the county.

This event is scheduled to be an annual event concurrent with the annual Jett Williams Festivities and netted $600 for the scholarship fund.

All in all, this was a great day of fun, competition, and camaraderie for law enforcement officers and spectators alike.
