MCHS Basketball Banquet Held

The Macon County High School Basketball Banquet was held on Sunday, April 14, 2002. Tiger and Tigerette basketball players, as well as basketball cheerleaders and members of the Hospitality committee were recognized for their contributions during the 2001-2002 basketball season at MCHS.

One bright moment during the banquet was the appearance of Tigerette basketball player Heather Moore. Moore, who had been critically injured in a February 18, 2002, car accident, attended the basketball banquet with her teammates.

During the MCHS Tigerettes basketball team's segment of the tournament, MCHS Tiger head Coach Gary Carter started the afternoon's events off with the following statement, "I'm just proud to be here and I'm glad Heather's with us. A lot of prayers went out for her and somebody's made it through. I'm just glad that God was in her corner."

"I had the best group of parents ever. Our team had the best support of any team around close," Coach Carter continued. "This team has a lot of quality kids on it. They showed responsibility and dependability and honesty."

MCHS Tigerettes Assistant Coach Christy Jenkins also used the opportunity to announce that she was leaving MCHS at the end of the school year and said thank you to the parents for their support this year.

The MCHS Tigerettes basketball program received a certificate from the TSSAA recognizing the team as an Outstanding Scholastic team for maintaining a 3.2 GPA.

In addition three individual member of the MCHS Tigresses basketball team also received certificates for maintaining their GPA at 3.5 or higher during the previous semester. Receiving individual recognition were Neleigh Oldham, Courtney Thomas and Whitney Thomas.

Members of the 2001-2002 MCHS Tigerette basketball team included: Seniors - Ashley Jones, Brooke Shoulders, Amber Sullivan; Juniors - Patricia Carver, Heather Moore, Carrie Oldham, Neleigh Oldham, Jocosa Scott, PeeWee Troutt, Jody West; Sophomores: Ashley Oldham; Freshmen - Chelsea Compton, Karetha Perrigo, Tia Troutt, Courtney Thomas, Whitney Thomas, Kristan Wix; and Managers - Ashley Barksdale and Jenna Mahaney.

Individual awards were presented to the following players:

Most Assists - Brooke Shoulders

Best Field Goal Percentage, with 65.9% - Amber Sullivan

Best Free Throw Percentage with 75% - Brooke Shoulders

3 point field goal percentage with 35% - Jody West

Most Rebounds - Carrie Oldham

Best Defensive Player - Ashley Jones

Most Improved Player - Patricia Carver

Academic Award - Neleigh Oldham

Most Valuable Pl;ayer - Carrie Oldham

Nera White Award - Ashley Jones and Brooke Shoulders

Miss Hustle Award - Heather Moore

Chamber of Commerce Award - Amber Sullivan

MCHS Tiger basketball Head Coach Darian Brown began his segment of the program by thanking his parents as well.

"I want to thank the parents," Coach Brown said. "We demand a lot of these young men. We demand a lot of early morning and late evenings."

Coach Brown also recognized MCHS teacher and Tiger parent Kathy Cothron for the assistance she provided during the season with teh organization of team meals and preparation of the hospitality room for each home game.

Coach Brown will be losing both of his assistant coaches from last year. Jeff Beam will be returning to school full time and Brad Tuttle will be exploring other opportunities.

Individual team members receiving a GPA of 3.5 during the previous semester were Ryan Cothron and Adam Bandy.

Members of the the 2001 - 2002 MCHS Tiger basketball team included: Seniors - Brandon Carnahan, Chad Compton, Ryan Cothron, Dustin Marr; Junior - Witt Cook, Nick Felker, Nick Howser, James Law, Jonathan West, Jared Williamson; Sophomores - Nathan Harris, Michael Wix; Freshmen - Adam Bandy, James Bartolotta, Kyle Deering, Josh Kirts, Reagan Newberry, Justin Prock, Matt Turner; managers- Josh Higgins; and Statistician - Jr. Spears.

Individual awards were presented to the following players during the banquet :

Most Assists - Chad Compton

Deflection award - Chad Compton

Best Field Goal Percentage - Nathan Harris

Best Free Throw Percentage with 79% - Chad Compton

3 point Field Goal Percentage with 46% - Nathan Harris

Most rebounds - Brandon Carnahan

Most Steals - Chad Compton

Most Improved Player - Dustin Marr

Weightlifting Award - Nathan Harris and Chad Compton

Best Defensive Award - Jonathan West

Academic Award - Nick Howser

Most Valuable Player - Brandon Carnahan

Take a Charge Award - Brandon Carnahan

Chamber of Commerce Award - Ryan Cothron

In addition, two Tiger players reached the 1,000 point club during their season at MCHS. Brandon Carnahan scored 1,557 points during his Tiger basketball career and Chad Compton scored 1,132 points during his career at MCHS.

The MCHS Basketball Cheerleaders were recognized by the coach Andrea Tuttle. Coach Tuttle stated that, "This squad was used to increase school spirit and get the fans involved."

The team received an outstanding scholastic award for maintaining a 3.0 GPA.

Two cheerleaders received a Student Athlete Award of Merit for their individual academic awards - Nathan Wilson and Mandy Wilson.

MCHS Basketball Cheerleaders for the 2001-2002 season included -

Seniors - Joseph Cross, Jessica Hauskins, Elysia Whitaker, and Nathan Wilson; Juniors - Jessica Glover, Jamie Kemp, Sara Beth Law, Hollye Wilkerson; Sophomores - Rachel Harper, Sara Swack; Freshmen - Mignon Crawford, Jennifer Russell, Kelly Trent, and Mandy Wilson.

Kathy Cothron recognized the members of the Hospitality Committee including Seniors - Andrea Spears , Kristen Wix; Juniors - Holly Andrews, Jessica Andrews, Ashley Bransford, Amanda Caruthers, Rachel Storey; and Sophomores - Lindsay Gregory and Lindey Napier.
