Until recently, all property owners who did not live inside the Lafayette City limits, were going to have to vote in the Lafayette City Election were going to have to do so at the Macon County Junior High.
During the past week, a solution to this problem has been found.
Now, individuals who own property inside the Lafayette city limits, but live in Macon County can go to their regular voting location to cast their vote.
However, individuals who own property inside the Lafayette city limits, but live somewhere other than Macon County, must go to the Macon County Junior High School if they wish to vote in the Lafayette City Election.
In a released statement, Leath stated:
"The Macon County Election Commission office recently sent out a letter stating that property rights voters in the City of Lafayette Election would have to vote at Macon County Junior High School on Election day.
This is no longer necessary. Property rights voters who are registered voters in Macon County can cast a city ballot at their regular voting place on Election day.
Property rights voters that live outside of Macon County will have to vote at Macon County Junior High School on Election day."
Early voting begins next Wednesday in the Lafayette City Election. All individuals wishing to vote during the early voting period must do so at the Macon County Election Commission office, located at located at 111 East Locust Street in Lafayette (across from the Lafayette Post Office),. Early voting begins on Wednesday, April 17, and will continue for two weeks. Early voting in the Election will end on Thursday, May 2.
Office hours at the Macon County Election Commission during the two week early voting period will be Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. In addition, on the last day of Early voting, set for May 2, the office will be open from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
In this election, three seats are up for grabs on the Lafayette City Council.
These positions are currently held by Charlie Jones, Lloyd Driver, and Opal Johnson. None of the three incumbents will be running for another term in office.
Five candidates did qualify for the three positions on the Lafayette City Council - (listed alphabetically) - Michael Duffer, Ruby Flowers, Carl Hudgens, Ronald Jenkins, and Steve Turner.
The top three vote getters in this election will be appointed to the Lafayette City Council.
Individuals wishing to vote in the City of Lafayette election must either be residents of the City of Lafayette or be registered as property owners inside the city limits of Lafayette.
The official Election Day for the City of Lafayette Election will be May 7.
