Woman extracted, lifeflighted from RBS wreck

A woman was pinned in her vehicle for an hour after crashing her car into a tree on Thursday afternoon. Emergency and extrication units from Macon County and Red Boiling Springs city had to cut into the car in multiple places in order to get the woman out.

Her legs were pinned under the dashboard, and at one point even a neighbor’s tractor was brought around to try to pry the whole front of the vehicle away from them in order to free her. She sustained severe injuries to one leg, and also complained of neck, back and arm pain.

Officers said that Carolyn H Short, age 64, crashed her car because of extreme tiredness and may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Emmanuelle Hostetler of the Summer Shade, KY Fire Department, was driving north on Gameliel Road in front of the 2003 Chevy Yukon that Short was driving:

“I saw her down the road here, and I looked in my mirror and thought ‘well, she’s passing me’ then it looked like she changed her mind and went in behind me again,” said Hostetler. “And then we were watching in the mirror, she’d go over in this lane, and then to the right side, and she was just weaving around. I almost called her in. Then when we got to this part of the road my son looked back again and said ‘Oh! She wrecked.’”

Hostetler turned around, calling 911 as he came back, and was the first person to get to Short. “She was just like ‘get me out of here, get the door open’ and I had to say ‘I’m sorry, I can’t get the door open; it’s jammed.’ And I told her I had help coming. She was complaining of chest pains, and her legs. She said ‘I’m hurting all over, get me out of here.’ There was no way.”

When emergency responders finally freed the woman, she was transported to the Nestle water plant, and flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Holt is from the Hestand, KY area.
