This year’s Relay for Life event raised over $47,000, rain or no rain.
“Except for having to start up about an hour late, the rain didn’t really change anything,” said Co-organiser Lisa Yokley.
The event did run just about as planned, although a mass of umbrellas could be seen passing from campsite to campsite early in the evening.
Campsites were set up by all participating teams plus a few other groups: Walmart, Macon Bank & Trust, MCGH, Hillwood Helpers, Measure Up, Citizens Bank, NCTC, MCHS Interact, Nestle Waters, Dodson Farms, Holy Family Catholic Church, Cobb Vantress, Walgreens, and Tamar Coley & Friends.
The survivor walk started just as the rain was starting to slow, and attendees enjoyed activities, speakers, food, and entertainment. 305 luminaria bags had been sold, and these were lit during a memorial walk. Late in the evening, the following awards were given out.
Most money raised: Wal-mart
Most Luminarias sold: Citizens Bank
Best Decorated Campsite: Dodson Farms
Spirit Award: Measure Up
Midnight Special (most members still present at midnight): Macon County High School Interact Club
