Macon County General Hospital is hosting its annual Diabetes Health Fair on Thursday, November 8th at the Macon County Senior Center. The event will run from 9 AM to 1 PM, and coincides with American Diabetes Month.
“This is just a way to get information out to those that need it,” said Co-organizer Janet Skelton. “Half of people who have diabetes don’t know that they have it—so it’s partially for awareness. Many of these surrounding counties have high rates of diabetes, but many of them don’t even go to a health care provider, so they never find out.” MCGH also wants to continue to promote the ongoing free Diabetes support group that meets every Tuesday through the end of
The fair will feature vendors that specifically cater to this disease, offering diabetic footwear, glucometers, general information, diet help, and even recipes. A free healthy lunch will be provided between 11 and 12—homemade vegetable soup and pimento sandwiches—and lots of door prizes will be offered.
There will be two educational speakers. Nurse Practitioner Janice York will speak on general self management and blood sugar monitoring, and Sherry Hall from High Point Hospice will speak on the Wishes Program.
