Schools closed, salt truck overturns in icy weather

Middle Tennessee was hit by a wave of bad weather again on Thursday evening, with freezing rain making many roads impassible in Macon County. The Macon County school system was closed for Friday, along with many surrounding counties.

A salt truck overturned on Hanes Road at about 5:30 Friday morning. “It was a small pickup truck that the Macon County Highway Department had,” said THP Trooper Tracy Donoho, who responded to the accident. “He had a little salt-spreading machine on the back of the truck. He slid off the road going around a curve and it turned over on its side.”

The truck was driven by Brian Conyer of the Highway Department, who was not injured. Donoho had to exit his own vehicle, he said, and “walk a little ways to get down there to look the wreck because the road was iced over.”

The Sheriff’s Department has also responded to five other non-injury wrecks as of Friday morning, several with as many as three different vehicles involved. Many of these have turned out to be vehicles stuck in ditches or bad patches of road. So far the accident areas have included Long Creek Road, Hanestown, Smalling, Oakdale, and Cold Springs, according to dispatchers.
