Terry Ashe and Terri Merryman were at Macon Bank and Trust on Saturday to sign copies of Ashes of Bluebird, the book they worked on together.

The book is a collection of stories from Sheriff Terry Ashe’s experience serving 40-plus years in law enforcement, primarily in Wilson County, TN. Ashe was awarded three Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for Tet-offensive bravery in Vietnam, but faced his biggest battles after returning home to the area he grew up in— Bluebird Road. The area was overrun with drugs, moonshine, and prostitution, and Ashe’s experience as a real life Sheriff-takes-on-corruption character forms the meat of this book.

Terri Merryman’s short biography claims that she’s “ducked rifle fire, lived in an Israeli colony, and moved into a Russian village to get important interviews,” and that she’s interviewed people “as volatile as Shimon Peres, and Newt Gingrich, and as gentle as Lena Horne and Nancy Reagan.” Merryman’s background is in journalism and TV, and this is her first effort as a ghostwriter.

Their work together began in June of this year. Essentially, Ashe gave her journals, tapes, and “boxes of things,” she said, along with this notebooks of manuscripted stories, and she culled through and polished them into the product now hitting shelves.

Ashes of Bluebird is being published by Westview Press, and at the official website—www.ashesofbluebird.com—is available for $37 (hardcover) and $23 (paperback).
