A Westmoreland man died on Sunday, May 19 after being struck by a car on Friday afternoon. James Chitwood, age 34, was traveling on foot north on Rocky Mound when the incident occurred. According to THP, the vehicle that struck him was driven by his girlfriend, April South, age 37.
South was also traveling north on Rocky Mound when her Honda Accord struck Chitwood.
Chitwood was taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he later passed away. South was arrested on the scene for driving on a suspended license, and was assigned a $2,000 bond. Her license had been revoked for failure to pay a judgment fine.
The couple was living together in the Hanestown community, just a few miles from where the incident occurred.
“We’re in a big investigation on it,” said Trooper Ed Crouch of THP. In addition to Crouch, the investigation is being led by CIRT certified Sgt. Mercer and the Macon County Sheriff Department. “I wish I could elaborate more,” said Crouch. He said that more information would be released as investigators were able to confirm details.
