For the first time this year, both of our county’s two FFA organizations will be hosting a plant sale. Red Boiling Springs FFA has never held this fundraising effort before, but it looks like the kids are hitting the ground running.

Christina Yokley, who teaches all agriculture classes at RBS High School, is sponsoring the project. This second year teacher says that she decided to start up this sale “to fund the shop and agriculture supplies that we need, and get the kids involved.”

And the kids are involved. Sixteen FFA students, under Yokley’s direction, grew all the plants that are being offered in the sale. The flowers were started from seedlings, and the vegetables were planted from seeds.

Flowers offered are begonias, geraniums, vincas, salvia, dusty miller, spikes, vinca major, sweet potato vine (ornamental), petunias, lobelia, marigolds. Flowers are being sold at the following prices: 3 cell packs-$1.50; 5” pots-$2.00; 2” pots-$1.00; Spikes-$2.00; Swt Pot Vine-$2.00; Vinca Major-$1.50.

Vegetables plants offered are tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, okra, pumpkin, watermelon. Vegetables priced as follows: 3 cell packs-$1.00; 2” pots-$1.00.

Hanging Baskets priced as follows: Large-$8.00; Small-$5.00; Wondering Jews-$12.00; Ferns-$14.00; Standing Ferns-$10.00.

The sale, which began April 15, will go on until all plants are sold. Hours are Mon-Fri 8-5, and Sat 8-12. Call Christina Yokley at 699-3125 with questions.

The MCHS FFA plant sale is also going on as we speak, and will continue until May 4th, or until all items are sold. “We’ll just sell it till it’s gone,” said agriculture teacher Tim Towns.

This sale is overseen by FFA advisors Tim Towns, Marty Curtis, and Tyler Vester, as it has been for several years past. All plants have been prepared by greenhouse students, and the sale is worked by shifts of FFA students.

The variety of plants includes flowers, vegetables, hanging baskets, ferns, and more; prices vary. Sale hours are M-F 8-4, and Saturday 8-12.
