A man and his 10-year-old son lost everything in a house fire on Thursday afternoon in the northwest corner of Macon County.
Rick and Hunter Bolen, residents at the trailer on 3904 West Fork Creek Road, were not at home when the fire occurred. A neighbor, Sherrie Johnson, said she saw smoke and “thought [another neighbor] was just burning trash… and then I saw smoke come through the roof there, and the closer I got, I could see it was on fire. And a couple pulled up; they had a cell phone and called.”
Rick Bolen came home to find half of his home gutted by fire, and the other half ruined by smoke damage. “Everything,” he said. “Everything.”
The fire originated in a bedroom. Cause is unknown, although Bolen suggested that it could have been an electrical short.
Responding to the scene was South Allen Fire Department, Macon County EMS, and the Lafayette Fire Department. “South Allen is primary response for that area, and we were mutual aid,” said Lafayette Fire Chief Keith Scruggs. “They done a really good job; we didn’t really do a lot but bring them some water.”
South Allen firefighters said it took them about forty minutes to get the fire under control.
