A Lafayette woman passed away Tuesday after being thrown from a four-wheeler on Sunday night.
Christy Hiland, age 22, was out for a pleasure drive with three other friends on Tanyard Road when the accident occurred at about 8 PM. Hiland’s ATV clipped the wheel of another ATV, which was driven by John Coulter, also of Lafayette. They were both traveling south on Tanyard, just at the intersection of Tanyard and Woodard Road.
Hiland’s vehicle flipped multiple times, traveling a few dozen yards before coming to a rest. Hiland was thrown from the vehicle sustaining massive head trauma, according to THP Trooper Danny Fisher.
She was taken from the scene by ambulance and flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center. There she remained on life support for some time, and was pronounced officially deceased Tuesday. Hiland is an organ donor.
Hiland and Coulter were each driving their own ATV; the other two individuals were sharing one. “They were out riding on the road like they shouldn’t have,” said Fisher. “Four wheelers are for back road use only, not for a locally maintained roadway.” The other three drivers will be cited, Fisher said, for using off-road vehicles on the roadway.
