Makin Macon Fit back for a 19th run

It’s almost time. September 8th is coming, and it’s bringing the 19th Annual Makin Macon Fit Family Fitness Festival with it.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Macon County Junior High School, located at 1003 Highway 52 Bypass East, Lafayette. This event, supported completely by local volunteers, is designed to benefit Macon County schools, teachers, and the community.

Because of the great help given by our volunteers, we are able to take the money raised and donate it directly to our local education programs. One of the goals of Makin’ Macon Fit is to promote wellness.

The registration forms for all events can be picked up at any Macon County School, The Macon County Welcome Center/Chamber and Macon County General Hospital.

Fill out and return by Sept. 7 for the Early Registration rate; on Sept. 8 you will be charged the Day-of Rate.

5K and Walks

Nestle Water sponsors the 5k Race again this year. This is a perfect first race for the new runner. Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners. There will also be a one-mile walk—which premiered last year—sponsored by Macon Bank & Trust, and the three-mile walk, sponsored by Citizens Bank.

The 5K begins and ends at the Macon County Jr. High School on the east side of Lafayette, Tennessee. The school is located on Highway 52 exactly 3 miles east of the intersection of Highways 10 and 52. Look for the banners! Race time is 7:30 CDT sharp. Race day registration ends at 7:00.

All pre-registered runners will receive an official Makin’ Macon Fit t-shirt, and late registrants will receive T-shirts as supplies last.

Award categories. Overall Male and Female, plus top two males and females in 10 age categories. Award ceremony will be at 9:00.

The 5K is on a closed course. The terrain is flat to gently rolling. This is an out and back course along a rural and scenic Macon county road. Water stations and split times are provided. Fruit, fluids, and snacks after the race.

Bike Tours

At this year’s fitness festival, there will be a 10-mile bike tour (sponsored by Knollwood), 33-mile (sponsored by North Central Telephone Company), and 66-mile tour (sponsored by Macon County Times).

General Info: All tours will begin at 8:00 sharp! Riders must wear helmets and obey all rules of the road. There will be sag support for each tour with food/water stations. We are blessed in this area of Tennessee to have scenic, rural roads with low traffic. Please note, however, that you will be riding on open roads. Traffic will not be stopped at intersections. Road surface is generally good. Turns will be marked and course maps will be available at registration.

The 66 Mile and 33 Mile Tours: These tours are each great rides. They are generally rolling, but expect a couple of good hills before you get home, for either. You must be 16 years of age or ride with an adult to do either of these tours.

The 10 Mile Tour: This tour is geared toward the new or younger rider. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. This out and back course is basically flat with good road surface. There will be a food/water station at the mid-point, and a place to rest. This is a great parent-child ride and a good way to introduce your child to the freedom of cycling. This course is open to traffic, so make sure your child knows the rules of the road and how to stay safe in traffic.

Kids Events

Young children will enjoy the kids’ events (sponsored by Palace Care and Rehab). The kids’ events will have the bike rodeo, obstacle course and fun run. There will be games and inflatable bouncy tents. There are also door prizes to be given away, including bicycles, helmets and other items donated by several organizations. The prize drawings take place at approximately 11 a.m.

The Macon County school with the most participants is awarded. $500. Also this year, $300 will be awarded to the school with the second-highest number of participants. Other proceeds help fund the scholarship and support Lafayette Rotary and Interact Club community projects.

Sponsors

We want to thank all of our sponsors for this year’s event:

Nestle Water, Citizens Bank, Quorum Health Services, Macon County Times, Tri-County Electric, Macon County Chronicle, Family Care Center, Championship, Macon County Coordinated School Health, NCTC, Macon Bank & Trust Co., Farm Bureau, Upper Mid Tennessee’s Rural Health Network, Gallagher, Palace Care & Rehab, Knollwood Manor, The White House Assisted Living, Benchmark Title Company, Cobb, Subway, The Crichton Group, and Comprehensive Rehabilitation.

The host for this year’s event is Lafayette Rotary, MCHS Interact Club, MCJHS Junior Interact Club, Macon County Health Council, along with Macon County General Hospital. Registration forms can be picked up at any of our sponsors, Macon County School System, or Macon County General Hospital.

We are working hard to make this year’s event the biggest and best ever.

Please help us make this year’s celebration bigger and better than ever and remember the date: Sept. 8.
