A young woman and her one week old baby were pulled, unharmed, from a flipped car on Wednesday morning.
Megan McCauley, age 23, was driving east out of Lafayette on Galen Road in a Toyota Corolla at around 10:00 AM. Just inside the city limits, McCauley’s right tire slipped off the road and caught the edge of a driveway, which had deep ditches on either side. The vehicle then continued over the driveway and flipped end over end, landing wedged in the ditch beyond.
“Speed couldn’t have been too much of a factor,” said reporting THP Trooper Ed Crouch, “or the distance would have been farther.”
Randy East, of Lafayette, is the one who pulled the mother and her baby from the still-smoking car.
“I was coming towards town, and I saw a vehicle laying in the ditch with no one around, and I thought well, a wreck’s happened and they haven’t cleared it away yet,” said East. “Then I looked again and the wheels were spinning. So I knew… I went to the car, and I just heard muffled crying, and grunts and groans.
“I guess I asked her ‘are you okay’, and she said ‘yes’, and I said ‘how many are in there’, and she said ‘just me and my baby’. And I said ‘hand me the baby’, because the car was filling with smoke and she was coughing. So she handed me the baby through the window, and I laid it in the front seat of my truck, because I knew it wasn’t going anywhere.
“I came back and tried to get her out, and I couldn’t on the driver’s side because the door was jammed against the ditch. And on the passenger’s side there was just a small opening for her to get out. She was trying to crawl out on her stomach, but I had her lay on her back, and just barely got her. I think she’s just got a cut on her eye. And the baby looks all right, so—thank Jesus, they’re all okay.”
East also called 911, and paramedics treated and released mother and baby at the scene.
